2005. The iphone was still in development, and no one had heard of Facebook, let alone Insta or TikTok!
No, it was all about Myspace, that a second generation of spiky post-punk garage bands were using to bypass the internet fearing mainstream, going straight to the fans and building up a community of like minded people! Spearheaded by Arctic Monkeys, but with a massive foothold in Hull courtesy of The Paddingtons, a clubnight was needed to give a home to this music. Step forward Jelly! The night that prioritised the new over the retro (ably supported by a second room focussing on the simultaneous explosion of Emo and PopPunk).
When all the indie bands turned to Nu Rave.
When Electroclash made waves long before it kicked into the charts rebranded as ‘EDM’
When ‘AM’ brought those Monkeys back to the fore, dragging Catfish & The Bottlemen along for the ride
When Charli XCX was more ‘Nuclear Seasons’ than ‘Brat’
Jelly was there for all of it.
Always moving with the times and making clear that indie has NEVER been a style of music – it’s a style of MIND! And it’s still here, having survived all the challenges to music and clubbing. Still here, and still at [w]elly every Thursday, after 20 incredible years! Jelly has never wobbled…
So to celebrate 20 years this Easter Sunday, the main room will see us playing all the Jelly classic anthems from across 2005 to today. Upstairs will revert to being The Cell, exclusively emo and poppunk classics all night. Jelly Baby anybody?
